About these archives: a message from USA Ultimate

The 2011 College Division was the first full year of implementation of the remaining changes to the college restructuring process.

Changes included changes from 8 to 10 Regions, a greater strength compenent to bid allocation, and the formation of conferences of teams separated by factors such as geography and school size, prior D-I Nationals qualification, and developmental status.

Teams could (optionally) participate in a regular season of USA Ultimate sanctioned events, from which games between eligibility-verified teams were included in a set of computer rankings which determined bid allocation throughout the series.

Regardless if a team participated in the regular season, every team began the series at their Conference Championships.  From there, the top few teams advanced to D-III and D-I Regionals, qualifying teams for the D-III College Championships and D-I College Championships.  [see flowchart]

The 2011 USA Ultimate College Championships were once again at Pleasantview Fields in Boulder, CO.  Grass Roots Ultimate served as the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the event.

Wind was a major storyline as sustained heavy winds late in the tournament drastically impacted play.

In the Women's division, the California-Santa Barbara Burning Skirts were in the final for the 5th straight year, winning 13-9 against tournament surprise Michigan Flywheel in what was a rematch of the 1990 championship game.

In the Open division, regional rivals Carleton College CUT and Wisconsin Hodags battled through extremely windy conditions in the Open final, with CUT coming out on top 11-5 against the 2007 & 2008 champs.

The week prior to the D-I College Championships, weather played a role as well at the 2011 USA Ultimate D-III College Championships in Buffalo, NY.

Although heavy rains in the weeks leading to the event resulted in moving the event to backup fields, the weather during the event was sunny and calm, leading to high flying action.

The Claremont Braineaters deafeated St John's 11-9 to capture the Open division title, and #1 seeded Carleton College-Eclipse defeated Williams 8-6 in the Womens final.

Note: the USA Ultimate event archives serve as a living document to preserve and share our organization and sport's rich history. Although care has gone into researching information before posting, we realize that inaccuracies may exist, and seek help from the Ultimate community to help fill in the gaps of knowledge that may otherwise be lost.  Please make use of the comments sections on these pages to share stories and information that are relevant to those years and competition divisions.

In time, we will add to these pages with more information, detail, and better presentation as we go through our extensive and continually growing Ultimate archives.  Contact archives@usaultimate.org if you have any information or materials that can help make these archives a better resource for the Ultimate community.  Of particular interest to us are dontations of any photographic, video, or physical materials that may be deteriorating in Ultimate alumni's attics.
