Directing the Member Services & Community Development department essentially means serving my awesome staff to the best of my ability, while also working on developing and/or enhancing the annual national organizer’s convention, the Affiliate Program to serve local disc organizations and the State-Based Organization initiative to establish regional governing bodies that oversee an entire state (or several) to improve service to local areas, members, teams, leagues and clubs.
Before coming to USA Ultimate, I was a local organizer with Triangle Ultimate in North Carolina for almost five years, serving as the board treasurer, league/tournament director and then full-time interim executive director. My professional background is otherwise heavy on software development with some forays into nursing, teaching and disaster relief.
Ultimate first began improving my life in 1997 while I attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL (and needed a next step from my then-competitive soccer and basketball background) where I began playing and traveling with the Sundried Yams (sponsored by Gold Bond Medicated Powder), University of Alabama's men's team (as a pickup when enrollment wasn't required), and various local open/men’s club teams. After following my now-wife to Raleigh, NC in 2003, I continued playing and captaining men’s ultimate teams at the regional level before aging into the master’s division at the national level (along with lots of league & hat tourney play and organizing). In addition to continuing to play ultimate today at the league and masters levels here in CO, I enjoy hiking, biking, scuba diving, beach bumming, working with kids, helping people in need, appreciating craft beers, learning new languages and traveling to new places.
1. I’m the only club ultimate player (to my knowledge) who speaks Papiamentu, the heart language of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao (where I grew up) in the southern Caribbean.
2. Although my only pets now are two dogs (a congenitally blind yorkshire terrier named Waka and a black sheepadoodle named Lola), I’m an animal lover who once simultaneously owned 27 snakes, three turtles, two iguanas, a monkey-tailed skink and a spunky little wire-haired jack russell terrier named Sally.
3. The only ultimate nickname I’ve ever had is "Turf" which I acquired while playing on the N.C. men’s club team Cannibal as the taller of two players named Josh Murphy; my slightly shorter teammate (now playing in South Africa) was nicknamed "Surf."
